Key Responsibilities
1. Automation Technology Development
- Design, prototype, and optimize new automation technologies for chemistry workflows in self-driving labs.
- Enhance the robustness and flexibility of custom or commercial hardware/software modules, including systems for automated chemical synthesis, analysis, and sample translocation.
- Collaborate closely with chemists and process engineers to integrate automation solutions into experimental workflows.
- Develop and implement experimental protocols to test and validate new automation technologies.
2. Systems Integration and Maintenance
- Integrate automation systems with existing laboratory equipment and processes to ensure seamless operation.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade automation platforms, including robotic systems and high-performance analytical instruments.
3. Technical Communication
- Prepare research presentations with clear and effective data visualizations.
- Collaborate with computer science colleagues on data curation and visualization projects.
- Support the development of technical grant proposals and manuscripts.
4. Lab Safety
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols, including chemical material handling, environmental management, and maintaining accurate safety records.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Automation Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- A Master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- 4+ years of experience in designing and implementing automation technologies, preferably in a chemistry or laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in Python, API interfacing, and debugging code.
- Strong experience with parametric CAD software such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
- Advanced skills in electronics and laboratory equipment troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with UPLC/HPLC instruments and chromatography data systems.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and teamwork abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: CAD $85,000 - $120,000
- Employment Status: Full-time
- Benefits: Eligible for extended health benefits program
- Vacation: 15 days per year, with an additional day accrued for each subsequent year of service, up to a maximum of 20 days.
