Salary: $62,500 to $80,000 (Based on Tech Levels 1-3) + Overtime

Job Overview

Our client is seeking skilled Substation Relay Technicians to join their team in New Jersey. As a key player in maintaining and operating high-voltage substation systems, you’ll work on relay houses and indoor equipment areas to ensure safe and efficient operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Relay Testing & Installation: Install and test substation relays and switchgear for high-voltage systems.
  • Equipment Handling: Perform Doble testing and work with SEL/GE relays and other protective equipment.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure all safety regulations are followed, including being OSHA 30 eligible (training provided if renewal needed).
  • Maintenance: Perform routine and corrective maintenance on relay systems.
  • Work Location: Primarily work in the relay house with indoor equipment.
  • Shifts: Minimum 8 hours/day, 5 days/week (local work).

Job Duties

  1. Install, test, maintain, repair, and operate equipment including circuit breakers, transformers, relays, meters, and more.
  2. Complete records and reports, including relay targets, substation logs, and operational data.
  3. Locate, diagnose, and resolve electrical issues in circuits and substation equipment.
  4. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance using test equipment such as relay test sets, multimeters, ohmmeters, and more.
  5. Conduct periodic testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and adjustments of relays.
  6. Test and maintain substation remote alarms and equipment.
  7. Perform switching operations and report abnormal conditions to the Dispatcher.
  8. Assist in commissioning activities, calibrating protective relays and conducting functional tests.
  9. Familiarize with substation circuits, equipment, operations, and controls.
  10. Complete Job Skill Demonstrations and progression tests to qualify for promotion.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relay testing and substation commissioning experience (15kV to 500kV).
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
  • Ability to travel to client utility sites across the U.S., with overnight stays.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in full-lifecycle commissioning and testing of substations.
  • Troubleshooting and analyzing protection equipment.
  • Apparatus testing experience using tools like Doble, ProTest, AcSELerator, or Renoserv.
  • Experience with substation lightning stroke shielding and grounding plans.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead meetings with utility clients.
  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude and ability to work with small, complex equipment.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve electrical control and protection issues accurately.
